The Borinqueneers

A Documentary on the All-Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment

This FREE screening of the Borinqueneers is made possible by PRLACC (Puerto Rican/Latin American Cultural Center), the Asian American Cultural Center, UConn Library, and UConn’s Veterans & Military Programs. The film’s producer and director, Noemi Figueroa Soulet will also provide an introduction to the film along with a Q & A afterwards.

9/11 Events

9/11 Memorial Stair Climb – 8a.m. Sign-In at Sherman Field Bleachers (35 Gampel Service Dr., Storrs)

12:00p.m. Ceremony at the Student Union Theatre (Storrs)

Join us on Friday, September 11th, in honoring the heroes who lost their lives 25 years ago on 9/11/01 by climbing a simulated 110 stories, equivalent to the flights climbed by first responders in the Twin Towers. No advance registration. Sign-in will start at 8:00a.m. All are welcome to participate in the stair climb and/or attend the ceremony at noon. DOS Drop-ins and VAMP Visits

During the Fall 2026 semester, the Dean of Students Office will hold drop-in hours in Hawley Armory (Storrs), so students can drop in without an appointment to ask any questions they may have.

Staff in UConn’s office of Veterans & Military Programs (VAMP) will be visiting each of the campuses during Fall semester for any students who want to pose questions to them, or just say hi. Below are the dates times for each campus:

Sept. 23rd – Stamford in Rm. 141 at 10am – 2pm

Sept. 30th – Avery Point in Veterans OASIS (2nd floor library) at 10am – 2pm

Oct. 6th – Hartford in Rm. 216 (Hartford Times Bldg.) at 10am – 2pm

Oct. 8th – Waterbury in Rm. 230E (main bldg.) at 10am – 2pm

Oct. 13th – Law School in Hosmer VALOR bunker Rm. 002 at 10am – 2pm

VA Visits

Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) & Post-9/11 Military2VA (M2VA) Storrs Campus Visit on Tuesday, September 29th from 11am-1pm in Hawley 105. These are the folks who can process VA disability claims and sign people up for VA Healthcare.

UConn’s Veteran of the Month – Alex Sayre

The Office of Veterans & Military Programs (VAMP) at UConn is pleased to recognize Alex Sayre as UConn’s Veteran of the Month.  Alex has recently arrived to campus as an Active-Duty Infantry Officer serving as the new Department Head and Professor of Military Science for the Army ROTC Program at UConn.  Throughout his 16-year career, he has served in a variety of assignments, largely focused on preparing for an leading soldiers in combat.  He has also served as an advisor to foreign militaries, and experience that has given him a deep appreciation for the unique and challenging positions the Army provides.

Through his career, Alex has been amazed at the unique and challenging positions the Army puts soldiers in. Whether leading combat patrols in Afghanistan, advising our partners in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, or liaising with government agencies in D.C., the Army demands excellence and trusts its leaders to succeed. This is why ROTC training is so important.  Through ROTC, we are selecting and educating our future lieutenants in this academic setting, which is paramount to the success of our military and our nation.

Alex specifically sought this position at UConn because of the unique opportunity it provides to mentor the future leaders of our military.  The ROTC environment offers excellent training and leadership opportunities for our cadets, allowing them to grow and develop as students and leaders within the university setting.  As a former ROTC Cadet himself, Alex looks forward to seeing our cadets learn and grow through daily physical training, leadership labs, and field training exercises.

First, Alex conveys his appreciation for everyone at UConn who served/is serving in the military, since only a small fraction of our population service in the military and their contributions do not go unnoticed.  Next, he encourages all military and veteran students at UConn to use the skills and knowledge gained through their service for good across campus.  Whether that means serving in student organizations or simply helping other students in need, they can continue to make a positive impact.  Lastly, he says, “if you see me around campus, please stop and say hello!”
