Education Abroad and VA Benefits

Benefits and Scholarships for Military-Affiliated Students Who Want to Study Abroad

In some instances students can have their educational benefits from the VA applied to Study Abroad programs. However, we strongly encourage students to speak with staff in the Experiential Global Learning Program and the UConn Veterans & Military Programs before making any decisions regarding Study Abroad Programs.

UConn’s Experiential Global Learning

UConn’s Experiential Global Learning program is extensive and their staff have a wealth of information regarding opportunities for students on-campus, including those who are Veterans and dependents of military/active duty personnel. They also have information regarding scholarships that are available to Veterans and dependents to help cover the costs of these global learning opportunities.

VA Benefits and studying abroad

The VA has some limited information for students who want to use their VA Educational Benefits to study abroad. Prior to making any decisions regarding study abroad programs, please contact UConn’s Office of Veterans & Military Programs and ask to arrange a meeting with one of the certifying officials. Since each study abroad program is unique, VA Benefits may cover only a small portion, or none, of the costs for participating in one of these programs.  And, in some instances, even the State of CT Veterans Tuition Waiver may be applied to a study abroad program. Meeting with one of the certifying officials will provide much more detailed information about what your VA Benefit will/won’t cover for the program you’re considering.
